Ms. Bender’s 3rd Grade Procedures and Rules

Section One: Class Procedures

Our school day will begin promptly at 8:00am. Students need to have all
materials from their school supply list with them at school either in their locker or
desk.

Pencils should be sharpened before class begins in order to eliminate
distractions. If students need a pencil during a lesson, he or she should get it from
the “student stuff” container.

Any work being turned in to be graded should be placed in the turn in box.
Such work should not be handed to me! Work will be considered late if it is not at
school by the designated due date (homework will be due at 8:00 in the morning
after it is assigned, unless otherwise noted) and will be docked at a rate of 10% per
day.

Homework assignments and behavior colors will be written down each day
in the assignment book. I will also use this book for notes, and to request your help
should the need arise. Feel free to communicate with me, in turn, in the assignment
book. Once your child has completed their homework, the assignment book
should be signed by the parent or guardian and returned each morning.
Please allow your child to take responsibility for his or her assignment book! Each
time someone comes into our class during a lesson, it causes a distraction and
disrupts our learning time. Please do not come to class to sign an assignment book
during the school day. After a student has come to class with an unsigned book
three times per quarter, he or she will be asked to change their color (please see
the section on classroom management for an explanation of behavior colors). I feel
that the “three strikes” policy here is extremely lenient and fair, and is a good way
of teaching student responsibility.

Students should not bring any items to school with them that are not on the
supply list (including pencil sharpeners!). Items such as toys, games, make-up,
large amounts of un-needed money, etc., cannot add to our learning environment
and are expected to remain at home. Items that do come to school will be collected
and will need to be picked up by the parent.

I strive to maintain a fair and safe environment. Students should feel free
and encouraged to ask questions, or ask for my help. All work is assigned to assess
student progress and provide practice for new concepts. All work needs to be each
students’ own. Any cheating hinders my assessment of student progress, and will
be met with a grade of zero.

Section Two: Bathroom procedures

Students will be allowed to use the bathroom in our room when I am not
teaching! Students should only have to go one time in the morning and one time in
the afternoon. They will be allowed to go one additional time, but for all times
after that, students will have to change their color, unless the child has a doctor’s
note. If a student has to use the bathroom during a pull out activity, they are to go
straight to the bathroom and back. Any student caught playing in the hall or the
bathroom by myself or another member of the staff during an excused
bathroom trip will lose the privilege to go to the bathroom alone. It is not
appropriate for a student to excuse him- or herself from class to use the restroom
and take his or her time getting back to class. The student may miss important
information, or cause me to have to re-teach a concept that the rest of the class has
already covered!

Section Three: Friday Folders

Folders will be sent home on Fridays with all the graded work from the
week. This is a good way for you to assess your child’s progress between progress
reports! Be sure to look over the papers with your child. Your child may have
earned papers with low grades on them that will be inside the Friday folder
that have a pink sticker on them. Please sign and return those papers
promptly. You may write notes to me in the folder or assignment book. Please
sign and return the folder on Mondays!

Section Four: Field Trips

All students are required to have a signed and dated permission slip in order
to attend any field trip. Parents who plan to drive must have a current copy of
proof of insurance as well as a copy of their driver’s license before the day of the
field trip.

St. Boniface students have a standing reputation for the utmost respectful
behavior as St. Boniface ambassadors while attending field trips. I know that this
year’s third grade students will do what it takes to uphold that reputation. Failure
on the part of a student to exhibit self discipline may result in a loss of field trip
privileges.

Section Five: Communication

All teachers at St. Boniface believe in open communication between parents,
students, and teachers are important in order to have a successful relationship.
Please feel free to contact me at any time by email (lbender@stbonifaceschool.org)
or phone (479-783-6601)! Also, you can check out class page at http://
www.stbonifaceschool.org.

I will use the assignment book as a means to communicate with parents.
Again, feel free to correspond with me in that manner as well. This is an important
reason that the assignment book needs to be signed daily! If a student needs help
with an assignment, please don’t hesitate to contact me for help. Asking for help is
a sign that the student is taking responsibility and has a desire to complete the work
appropriately. I will be more than happy to help with a problem solving. I do not
want a parent or student to become overly stressed if I can be of assistance! =)

If there is an issue that needs to be discussed with me, please contact me by
phone or through the office to set up a meeting time. In the mornings between
7:40 and 8:00, I would like to focus on helping students get ready to start the
day! This is not a good time for a one to one conference. I will be extremely
flexible with my time when I am not with the students! Many times, conferences
can be conducted over the phone, even in the evenings when I am at home.

Section Six: Late or incomplete work

As I stated in section one, any assignment that is not turned in when it is due
is considered late. Students are responsible for completing all of their assignments.
If a parent brings in the assignment after the 8:00 bell, it does not change the status
of the assignment. Late or incomplete work will be docked at the rate of 10% per
day. It is very important that a student stays current in assignments and does not
fall behind. I suggest a routine check for all assignments before coming to school

each day. Another good way to make sure that all work is complete and back into a
backpack is to choose a particular time and place to do homework each evening.

Section Seven: Medications

All medications should be left in the office with a written schedule and
dosage. Students may not carry any type of medication or take it without
supervision. If you send cough drops with your child, they need to be in my desk
and I will give them to your child as needed. If a student needs medication on a
field trip, the parent needs to add that information to the permission slip.

Section Eight: Make-up work for excused absences

All make-up work will be ready to pick up in the office at the end of each
school day at 3:00. Calling ahead for assignments to be picked up during class
time is not necessary. I can also send assignments home with a sibling or a fellow
student, or it can be picked up by the student after his or her return to school. The
student will the same number of days to do make-up work as they were absent (ex:
it a student is absent 1 day, they have 1 day to do the make–up work; if a student
was absent 3 days, they have 3 days to do the make–up work). If more time is
needed, that can be worked out with me. Students need not get anxious over make-
up work when the situation is beyond their control. Students or parents should feel
free to call me for help or instructions on make-up assignments if they are not
clearly understood.

Section Nine: Class Rules, Behavior Colors, Rewards

I want each day that I spend with the students to be fun, exciting,
productive, and educational. Good behavior contributes to this environment much
more than negative, or attention seeking, behavior. I also like to encourage
teamwork and unity among the students. I believe rules and consequences are
necessary for a productive classroom.

Listen when others are talking.

Follow directions.

Keep hands, feet, and objects to yourself.

Work quietly and do not disturb others.

Show respect for school and personal property.

Work and play in a safe manner.

Behavior Colors-

Green- Great Day!

Yellow- Misbehavior, 3 minutes out of recess

Orange- Continued Misbehavior, 5 minutes out of recess

Red- Excessive Misbehavior, go to the principal’s office and contact parents

(The students will color their behavior color in their assignment book daily so you
will know how their behavior was for each day when you sign it!)

* Students that have been on green for 2 weeks will get a treat from the treasure
box!

Section Ten: Maintaining a Christian Environment for all

Students are absolutely expected to demonstrate a respectful attitude
towards others at all times. Dirty looks, gossip, name calling of any kind, put-
downs, or any other unkind action does not reflect the gospel values, harms self-
image of others and will not be tolerated. When disrespectful behavior occurs, we
will work on solving the problem. If repeated disrespectful or unkind behavior
occurs toward students or staff, a meeting with the parent, principal, teacher and
student may become necessary. Please work with me to promote a Christian
attitude for your student at all times.

Section Eleven: Miscellaneous

Please also read the school handbook for a complete list of rules and
guidelines for the school.

Please sign the handbook contract and return it to me!
