About What We're Doing This Week

February 6th-10th
ECC 2s: We will work with drawing and painting utensils.

PreK 3s, 4s, and 5s: We will create a bear's den using a variety of materials.
Literary Piece: Bear Snores On by Karma Wilson and Jane Chapman

Kindergarten & 1st: In preparation for Valentine's Day, we will be making Valentine hearts. This activity is designed to give the students more experience mixing paints into secondary colors. They will receive red, white, and blue paints. They will be encouraged to create shades of pink and purple in order to paint their hearts (on a pre-printed page).

2nd-6th: In preparation for Valentine's Day, students will create a Valentine "LOVE" card based on a sculpture by contempary pop artist, Robert Indiana. Students will use crayons and markers to create 3-D lettering on a background of color.

All elementary students will also be given time to complete their free art project from last week.

January 30th-February 3rd

All classes will be doing "free" art for Catholic Schools Week. They will be presented with a variety of materials, including craft sticks, tissue paper, straws, rubber bands, coffee filters, baking cups, as well as drawing materials. They will use all these materials to make a finished art piece. They will be allowed to work individually or in small groups. Younger children will have fewer choices of materials.

January 23rd-27th

ECC 1s & 2s and PreK 3s:
Last week's foil project was delayed because we worked on our "world" service project project instead. This week, we will be working on a marker/die cut drawing and collage.

Preschool 4s, & 5s: Last week, we worked on our "world" service project and this lesson was delayed.
Students will create penguins using cotton balls and black construction paper.
Literary Piece: Tacky the Penguin

Kindergarten, 1st, & 2nd Grade:
Students will study the work of Faith Ringgold and make a quilt art project based on her work. Squares of paper will be cut out and glued around the edges of the paper. Students will draw a favorite memory in the center square.

3rd grade:
Students will begin working on their portfolios using posterboard and various materials (magazine pictures, markers, glue, and crayons). These portfolios will be used to store artwork until the next art show (held in May).

4th grade:
Students will work on a saint project that will be on display during Catholic Schools Week.

5th, & 6th:
Students will begin work on a self-portrait. They will use a mirror and pencils to sketch themselves. Then, they will use oil pastels to add color and detail.
